Creative

Arts Therapy

By including creative arts therapy into the healing process of psychotherapy, individuals can begin to express themselves more freely and creatively, without necessary verbalizing their pain or concerns. Often, people who experience trauma, severe emotional distress, depression, anxiety, and a variety of mental health disorders have distorted views of themselves, and thus become stuck and unable to make the necessary changes in their lives. This type of incongruence prevents personal growth and development. By utilizing the techniques of the arts, such as the visual arts, photography, music, drama, and literature, individuals can become more integrated and self-aware. The creative arts also allow individuals to begin to visualize what they are striving for and the progress they are making to reach their goals. The process also allows individuals to establish a new sense of self, helps them to feel grounded and connected with their core beliefs, and gain confidence, inspiration, and insight. Creative arts therapies can be added into individual counseling sessions, or can be implemented on their own. There is absolutely no prerequisite talent needed to benefit from art therapy.  If you would like to find out more about creative arts therapies and how they can help you change your life, please call us at (847) 800-3105 or use our confidential Online Contact form.

Child Play Therapy

When a sudden change or traumatic event occurs in a child’s life it is crucial for the child to be able to understand and express their feelings. Play therapy allows children to begin to explore their feelings through the use of various therapeutic play activities. Play therapy is a safe, therapeutic and supportive environment in which children can not only understand and express what they are going through, but also begin to heal. Child Play Therapy utilizes the simple form of playing to allow children to communicate what they’re going through. Just like an adult would talk about their feelings with a therapist, a child is encouraged to play out their feelings.  It is important that we teach our children that expressing and talking about feelings is okay and through the use of play therapy children can learn important skills and coping methods to carry into their adult lives.  Play therapy can be a helpful tool in dealing with: traumatic events including and kind of abuse (physical, emotional, or sexual), accidents or disasters, divorce or separation of parents, death of a parent or loved one, growing up in an abusive household, being hospitalized or diagnosed with an illness. Play therapy can also be helpful to children who have been diagnosed with a learning disability, ADD/ADHD, and children with the Autism Spectrum.
